El Medano is situated in the municipality of Granadilla de Abona on Tenerife. El Medano translates as ‚the sand dune‘. The town is home to around 7,500 residents and lies on a small bay on the south-east coast of Tenerife, near the southern airport. Surfers and windsurfers in particular love El Medano for its usually perfect surf. To the south of El Medano lies La Montaña Roja, the Red Mountain. This is the eroded remnant of an ancient cinder cone. The hill is a protected nature reserve. From the top, there is a good view over El Medano and the surrounding area.
