Yolanda Ruano examines three fictional characters who defied the norms of their time: Ana Ozores from “La Regenta” by Leopoldo Alas Clarín, Emma Bovary from “Madame Bovary” by Gustave Flaubert, and Anna Karenina from the novel of the same name by Leo Tolstoy. The starting point is the social constraints within which these characters live, and the patriarchal framework of the 19th century.
Following a concise analysis of the three works, the lecture explores what message the authors sought to convey, what contemporary female readers can take away from them, and why reading these works from a gender perspective remains essential. Topics covered include desire, the body, transgression, the forbidden, sin, upbringing, religion, the construction of subjectivity, punishment and death as a symbolic conclusion.
The event forms part of the third series, “Una habitación propia. Visión y huella de relatos femeninos no contados”, coordinated by Elena Ramírez at El Almacén in Arrecife. The talk will take place at CIC El Almacén; admission is free.
