The Canary Islands Government will allocate ten million euros in next year’s budget to policies addressing demographic challenges, aimed at retaining the population in the region, as announced on Tuesday in Parliament by the President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo.

Speaking in the plenary session of Parliament, the President defended the Government’s commitment to the balanced development of all the islands and pointed out that the regional budget includes measures to promote territorial balance, including the guarantee of fuel subsidies.

He also argued that taxation should be a distinguishing factor in addressing the specific circumstances of each island, citing as an example the positive results which, in his view, La Palma has achieved with the 60 per cent personal income tax rebate.

Canary Islands: Demographic strategy aims to ensure equal opportunities across all the islands

«By treating those who are different differently, we can aspire to be equal,» said the President, who gave an assurance that the Government would not waver in this endeavour because citizens deserve to have the same opportunities regardless of the island on which they were born or where they live.
