On Tuesday morning, the Telde local authority announced that the wildfire in the municipality in the east of Gran Canaria had been brought under control. More than 15 hectares of land were destroyed by the flames. Fire brigades are still working to extinguish the last remaining embers.

A surveillance flight on Tuesday morning revealed no new outbreaks. As a result, the fire brigade in Telde and the neighbouring municipalities can begin to prepare for a partial withdrawal. Other teams are extinguishing the remaining hotspots and embers.

According to the 112 emergency call centre of Canarias, the wildfire broke out on Monday at 12.52 pm. The first callers reported heavy smoke near Cazadores. Just half an hour later, the Island Council released the first images of the fire, thereby confirming the major blaze.

The fire brigade was quick to report that conditions were difficult. The current Calima, accompanied by high temperatures and very dry air, helped the flames to spread. Furthermore, the conditions made the firefighters‘ work immensely difficult.

Nevertheless, the fire brigade reported initial successes as early as late afternoon. By 2 am on Tuesday morning, the forest fire was deemed to be under control. Since then, the main priority has been to prevent it from flaring up uncontrollably again, said the mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña. Given the weather conditions, people are understandably alarmed and cautious.

According to the Island Council, 15.5 hectares of land were destroyed in the fire. No people, animals or buildings were lost to the flames. Residents who had been evacuated were able to return to their homes as early as Tuesday.

A forest fire warning has been in place on Gran Canaria since Tuesday lunchtime for areas at altitudes of 400 metres and above.
