Lanzarote spruces up Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca

Lanzarote has launched the third phase of modernisation for the tourist resort of Costa Teguise. The project was published on Tuesday in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands, the BOC. This means it can now officially get underway. A modernisation programme has also been announced for Playa Blanca.

The aim of both measures is to boost the competitiveness of the holiday resorts. The Canary Islands Government and the Lanzarote Island Council plan to implement the regeneration programme through a cooperation agreement. Both sides will thus share responsibility and funding for the regeneration of the resorts.

Costa Teguise has already undergone two rounds of modernisation. Consequently, some of the plans there have already been finalised. The situation is different in Playa Blanca, where a number of issues remain unresolved.

Lanzarote is modernising key areas

Costa Teguise in the east and Playa Blanca in the south, together with Puerto del Carmen, situated halfway between the two, are among the most important holiday resorts on Lanzarote. Planning must now get under way in Playa Blanca. An administrative step has been taken there as a first move.

The Canary Islands Government, together with the Lanzarote Island Council, has signed a cooperation agreement to modernise the resort. According to the BOC, the aim is to revitalise the tourist resort in the municipality of Yaiza and make it more competitive. The resolution does not, for the time being, specify exactly what this will entail. The text does not specify any sums, deadlines or individual construction projects. The only detail set out is the plan to carry out extensive modernisation work.

Such decisions are not uncommon in the BOC. This is demonstrated, for example, by the Observatory for the Historic Town Centres of the Canary Islands or the funding of LGBTIQ+ projects and nurseries. At the same time, the regional government is working to speed up the granting of planning permission in the Canary Islands.

In the east of the Canary Islands, Fuerteventura is considered to be even more tourist-oriented. Nevertheless, Lanzarote is also heavily dependent on the holiday sector. A look at the population figures clearly illustrates both points. To remain competitive in this environment, Lanzarote, in collaboration with the regional government, now plans to bring in the diggers to certain areas and spruce up the island at key locations.
