This Sunday, Unión Deportiva Las Palmas will play in LaLiga Hypermotion wearing white and blue, the distinctive colours of CD Tenerife, in tribute to the Chicharrero striker Jesús de Miguel, who died as a result of the blow he sustained in a collision with Andorra’s goalkeeper, Jesús Owono.
«This Sunday, these are our colours. In tribute to Jesús de Miguel,» says the Gran Canaria-based team on its social media, alongside a photo of the entire squad dressed in blue and white.
On its website, Unión Deportiva Las Palmas explains that, when they host Eldense at the Gran Canaria stadium, their players will be wearing their third kit: a white shirt with a horizontal blue stripe across the chest and some yellow detailing (the team’s main colour).
UD Las Palmas: Commemorative shirt had previously caused controversy
This summer, when that shirt was unveiled, it caused something of a stir amongst some supporters, precisely because of its resemblance to that of Tenerife, Unión Deportiva’s long-standing rival (although for years now, there has been a broad consensus between their management teams).
Although the shirt already existed and was part of this season’s range, the club clearly explains what its intention is.
CD Tenerife receives support that transcends rivalry
«It will be an opportunity to pay tribute to Jesús by wearing a kit whose white and blue colours represent the blue-and-white team,» the club states on its website.
UD Las Palmas emphasises that it wishes to express in this way «its respect, affection and solidarity towards CD Tenerife and to convey, once again, its full support to his relatives, friends, teammates and the entire Blue and White family at this time of profound grief».
UD Las Palmas hopes that this gesture will also serve as a sign of unity amongst the entire Canarian football community in the face of a loss that transcends any sporting rivalry.
