There were fewer cars on the roads in Tenerife in August than there had been the previous month. The Island Council recorded around 1.56 million vehicle movements per day. This was 10.6 per cent fewer than in July, when the automatic monitoring stations recorded an average of around 1.75 million journeys per day.

The decline was observed across the entire monitoring network of the largest of the Canary Islands. The highest figure in August was recorded at the Padre Anchieta counting station, with more than 102,000 vehicles per day. In July, a station in La Laguna in the north of the island topped the list with an average of 111,000 vehicles. Even the busiest monitoring point in the network recorded less traffic than in the previous month.

The proportion of heavy goods vehicles on Tenerife stood at 4.3 per cent in August, 0.1 percentage points lower than in July. Whilst the overall volume fell significantly, the proportion of delivery traffic remained virtually unchanged.

Tenerife: Accident involving a gas lorry blocked the junction of the TF-1 and TF-4

The extent to which individual transport routes on Tenerife are congested was evident in early September at the junction of the TF-1 and TF-4. A lorry carrying gas cylinders had overturned there. As a result, traffic came to a standstill. The junction of the two motorways is one of the main access routes to the island’s capital, and the traffic jams following the accident were correspondingly long.
