Canary Islands report increase in new car registrations, strong growth on Lanzarote

Lanzarote recorded the strongest growth of any of the Canary Islands in August, with new vehicle registrations rising by 22.4 per cent. Across all the Canary Islands, the statistics office ISTAC recorded 5,559 newly registered vehicles in the same month. This represented a total increase of 2.8 per cent compared with the previous year.

Lanzarote thus grew eight times as fast as the Canary Islands average. Such outliers among individual islands have been evident in the statistics for months: in June, new car registrations fell across the Canary Islands, whilst one island stood out from the rest; the following month, the market had already rebounded.

Of the 5,559 newly registered vehicles in August, 3,310 were cars. The remaining 2,249 vehicles comprised vans, lorries, buses, motorbikes and trailers. There have been changes, particularly in terms of drive type.

Lanzarote leads the way in new vehicle registrations

Electric cars are well ahead in terms of new vehicle registrations in the Canary Islands. Sales of electric cars rose significantly in August. The charging network can only partially keep pace with this rapid growth: according to data from the Canary Islands government, there are 1,495 registered public charging points on the islands. Of these, 573 are in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, i.e. the western islands.

Car hire fleets account for a proportion of new registrations. Not only have there been significantly more providers since the pandemic, but their fleets are also growing. Providers are renewing their fleets, particularly before and during the peak season. As this is just around the corner and the figures are rising, this confirms the vehicle sales in the Canary Islands linked to tourism.
