Petrol prices rise across the Canary Islands as La Palma sees sudden surge

The price of diesel on La Palma has risen by 6.5 cents per litre in the space of a week. Across the Canary Islands as a whole, the increase was significantly lower at 0.7 cents. Diesel therefore costs an average of 1.567 euros per litre in the Canary Islands. This is roughly in line with May’s levels.

Across the Canary Islands as a whole, motorists are currently paying 1.457 euros per litre for premium petrol, which represents an increase of 0.5 cents compared with the previous week. Diesel prices have thus continued a trend that had already seen new record highs this summer, when the price of the fuel on the islands first broke through the 1.50-euro mark.

For diesel, the price difference between the most expensive and cheapest islands is 28.7 cents; for petrol, the spread is 25.1 cents. Four of the seven islands were above the Canary Islands average for diesel, and five for petrol. Here they are:

Diesel and petrol in the Canary Islands: an island-by-island comparison

La Gomera is at the top end of the scale for both fuels. The island was already the most expensive island in the Canary Islands at the start of August. Fuerteventura is the cheapest for diesel, whilst Gran Canaria is the cheapest for petrol. It is also home to the cheapest individual petrol station in the entire archipelago – for both diesel and Super 95.

Anyone who last filled up in the Canary Islands traditionally paid less than on the Spanish mainland due to lower taxes. This advantage still applies to the IGIC, the Canarian equivalent of VAT. However, the base price of fuel on the islands has often been higher than on the mainland, as demonstrated by the record prices for petrol and diesel in Tenerife at the start of August.
