Hiking on Tenerife

Anaga trail from Cruz del Carmen down to El Batán de Abajo

The 4.5 kilometre descent through laurel forest drops around 650 metres and takes about 1 hour 30 minutes, so it suits walkers with some experience. It ends at a hamlet with its own chapel.

In the municipality of La Laguna in the north of Tenerife, there are numerous beautiful walking routes. One of them leads from Cruz del Carmen to El Batán. The route is suitable for experienced walkers. Not least, the 650-metre climb makes the walk quite challenging. We have summarised the walk for you.

The walking route begins in the centre of Cruz del Carmen. You can reach the village via the TF-12 country road. There are several sights in Cruz del Carmen. Once you’re there, you should pop into the Nuestra Señora del Carmen pilgrimage church. There’s also a viewing platform from which you can take some great photos.

Hiking through Tenerife’s Anaga Mountains

Not far from the chapel, the starting point of the walk is just to the right of the nearby restaurant. A stone staircase leads to a paved track. Follow this initially through a forest of myrtle and laurel trees.

Carry on along the path and you will eventually come to a slight incline. Continue along the path on the right-hand side. After several hundred metres, you will reach the path to Las Hiedras. Eventually, you will come across a stone staircase and a wall on the right-hand side. These will lead you straight towards El Batán.

Now walk downhill until you reach a path that has only recently been laid out along the original route. The first turn-off to the left leads towards the TF-143 country road. This will eventually take you straight to your destination.

Follow the road at a normal pace for about 20 minutes until you reach the hamlet of El Batán de Abajo. Here, too, you’ll find a beautiful pilgrimage chapel. We hope you enjoy the breathtaking view over the Anaga Mountains.
