Playa de las Américas

Playa de las Americas, from sheltered sand to Puerto Colon

The resort grew out of barren land in the 1960s and 70s and now runs seamlessly into Costa Adeje, with a sea wall keeping the Atlantic swell off the beach, golf courses inland and Siam Park nearby.

Just like the neighbouring town of Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas is lined with hotels and apartments. Dotted amongst them are restaurants, supermarkets and pubs – which are rather unusual for the Canary Islands. Nevertheless, there is something to suit every type of tourist here.

History of Las Americas

The name Las Americas stems from a legend from the Canary Islands. According to this, Tenerife residents wishing to emigrate are said to have gathered on the south-western edge of the island to wait for a ship to take them to the longed-for America. The lunar-like terrain typical of the south of Tenerife was unsuitable for agriculture, so the indigenous people did not settle in this area.

However, in the 1960s and 70s, the few valuable stretches of land eventually gave resourceful property developers the idea of creating a tourist hotspot. The vast area of Playa de las Americas was eventually divided into various sections for the sake of simplicity. These now stretch from Costa Adeje in the north to Las Americas further south.

Playa de las Americas on Tenerife – beach and expensive yachts

As long as the sun is shining, the beach is the main attraction of Playa de las Americas. The strong Atlantic surf is kept at bay by a breakwater. This means sun-worshippers can enjoy themselves undisturbed by the forces of nature.

Anyone looking to escape the sand and the hustle and bustle of the beach should pop over to the marina. Puerto de Colón is a very busy marina where the main focus is on seeing and being seen. For this reason, eye-catching and expensive yachts can always be admired moored at the jetties.

Las Américas – Perfect facilities and something for everyone

The boundaries between Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje have now completely blurred due to the row of hotel complexes and the connected promenades, which is why the neighbouring town is also associated with party holidays and action.

However, Costa Adeje is also trying to shake off its image as a ‚party destination‘ by raising prices. That said, this no longer means that Playa de las Americas is particularly cheap. Prices here, too, have risen over time. On the other hand, the quality on offer in the hotels is generally good.

Several high-quality golf courses have sprung up around the city, and the range of water sports and whale-watching (photos) on offer is, in some cases, first-class. And those who have come to the city primarily for a party holiday will certainly get their money’s worth too.

The infrastructure around Playa de las Americas and Costa Adeje is well-planned and very well developed. From luxury hotels to holiday homes and from restaurants to pubs, everything is on offer. There’s also a wide variety of day-out options, including Siam Park, Europe’s largest water park. So nothing stands in the way of a lovely holiday.
