Where to play golf on Tenerife, from Abama to Buenavista

Black lava bunkers, greens perched on cliff edges and views towards Teide or La Gomera. The mild climate all year round and stops by the PGA and Ladies European Tour keep the island's courses busy.

The golf courses on Tenerife are particularly striking for their impressive views. Whether you’re playing towards Mount Teide or towards the Atlantic Ocean, the views are enchanting. Where else do you find black sand bunkers, or have to hit a ball across the ocean onto the green?

The PGA Tour stops off in Tenerife

No wonder, then, that the PGA and the Ladies European Tour also stop off on this Canary Island every year. But which are the island’s most beautiful golf courses? Below, we reveal where you can enjoy particularly beautiful golf on Tenerife:

Map of golf courses in Tenerife

„Abama Golf & Spa“ auf Tenerife

The „Abama Golf & Spa Resort“ is one of the real gems of the golfing world. Not just on Tenerife, but worldwide. The resort boasts its own 18-hole course. Golfers regard the championship course, designed by golfing legend Dave Thomas, as one of the most beautiful in Europe. But that’s not all in terms of celebrity appeal: even Bill Clinton has swung a golf club here.

Given the sometimes extreme temperatures in the south of Tenerife and the long distances of over six kilometres, a buggy becomes a golfer’s best friend. And no expense has been spared when it comes to choosing the right set of wheels: the golf buggies here are equipped with GPS and a cool box.

If, despite the chilled drinks, playing golf becomes too tiring, you can take a short break in the shade of the palm trees, enjoying a gentle sea breeze. The Abama Course is particularly beautiful – not least because it features its own stream, lakes and waterfalls – but can be very challenging in places.

If this championship course proves too much of a challenge, there are four other golf courses within a radius of just a few kilometres. Among the better ones are „Golf Adeje„, „Golf del Sur“ and „Amarilla Golf“.

„Golf Las Americas“ on Tenerife

Teneriffa Golf Las Americas
The Las Americas golf course on Tenerife is extremely challenging and is also considered one of the most beautiful in Europe.

„Golf Las Americas“ is a fairly flat yet well-maintained American-style 18-hole course. For practice sessions, you should use „Los Palos“, as nine par-3 holes and a driving range won’t keep you entertained for long. As the courses are situated in tourist hotspots, both are usually quite busy.

„Amarilla Golf Club“ on Tenerife

The „Amarilla Golf Club“ is situated right by the sea and boasts spectacular views. Players can enjoy the rich natural beauty of the Canary Islands. The course’s most famous hole is the 5th. On this par 3, the green can only be reached by hitting the ball across the Atlantic from cliff to cliff.

„Golf del Sur“ on Tenerife

One of the island’s classic courses is the 27-hole „Golf del Sur“, situated inland. This course opened back in 1987. Since then, it has hosted several major international tournaments and was the venue for long-hitter Karl Woodward’s world record attempt.

In 1999, Woodward hit the golf ball 373 metres. Yet despite this impressive feat, the course actually demands a great deal of precision. Whilst it does have wide fairways, its volcanic rock ravines are treacherous. Added to this are various sand bunkers filled with black lava sand.

„Golf Costa Adeje“ on Tenerife

Costa Adeje in the municipality of Adeje is the „upmarket suburb“ of Playa de las Américas. This is where „Golf Costa Adeje“ is located. Surrounded by numerous four- and five-star hotels, the course is well frequented.

The 18-hole course is situated on a former banana plantation. With its stone-walled contours, it has a very special charm. The golf course borders directly on the Atlantic Ocean and, in some places, offers sensational views as far as La Gomera.

„Buenavista Golf“ on Tenerife

Although the density of golf courses is particularly high in the south of this holiday island, there are also opportunities to play a round in the north: ‚Buenavista Golf‘ is situated in the north-west. Even the journey to the course is an adventure in itself. After a scenic drive along winding mountain roads, you reach the course designed by the legendary Severiano Ballesteros. „Buenavista Golf“ is regarded as the scenic highlight of any golfing tour of Tenerife. What’s more, due to its location, it tends to be less crowded.

The course is situated in Buenavista del Norte, surrounded by cliffs, and offers views down to the deep blue sea and the Teno massif rising up in the distance. It features an 18-hole course, with some of the greens situated right on the edge of the cliffs. And after your round, you can visit the legendary lighthouse.

„Real Club de Golf Tenerife“

Not far away stands the „Real Club de Golf Tenerife“. This course dates back to 1932 and was built by British merchants. The atmosphere that surrounds golfers here reflects this history.

As is so often the case in the north of Tenerife, it is noticeably quieter here and there are fewer tourists than in the resorts in the south of the island.
