Blue number plates now mark taxis and licensed drivers in Tenerife

New vehicles receive the plate on production of a transport licence, and cars already registered must change over by August 2019. The blue plate with white lettering goes at the rear only, while the front keeps the usual white one.

The Canary Islands government hopes to put an end to illegal chauffeur services by introducing blue number plates. From now on, taxis and other official chauffeurs will be identified by these blue number plates. This means that it will be possible to tell at a glance who holds an official passenger transport licence.

Anyone registering a new taxi or similar saloon car will, from now on, only be issued with a blue number plate upon presentation of their licence. All vehicles already registered must replace their existing number plates with new blue ones by August 2019.

Taxi associations complain in particular that, when holiday flats are let privately, airport pick-up is often included in the offer. However, in certain cases, this may be illegal without a passenger transport licence. Furthermore, the aim is to put a stop to other unauthorised taxi services.

The blue number plates are intended to provide greater transparency at a glance. But please note: the number plates, designed with white lettering on a blue background, will only be fitted to the rear of vehicles. At the front, they will continue to bear the standard white number plates with black lettering.
