If you want to secure a table at Bodega Julián, you’ll either need to arrive very early or have booked in advance. This small restaurant from the Canary Islands has only a few seats, which are sometimes snapped up within minutes. As an alternative, the chef is happy to offer a seat at the bar – which is only off-putting at first glance. After all, it’s a brilliant place to enjoy a meal there too.
The wine list features mainly regional wines. In doing so, the owner quite rightly gives local wines a chance. The island really comes into its own when it comes to white wines. In most cases, you can even try a sample before ordering.
Bodega Julián: When the owner turns the music down
The team at Bodega Julián also draws inspiration from the region when it comes to the food. After a small amuse-bouche, guests are offered prawns, ham and cheese, as well as a variety of fish, meat and vegetable dishes at reasonable prices.
The biggest surprise, however, isn’t on any of the menus: as soon as the hustle and bustle in the dining room has died down a little and the orders have reached the guests, the hosts discreetly adjust the sound system every hour or two and turn down the music from the Canary Islands. Then they grab a guitar themselves and sing stage-worthy Canarian songs as a duet. What might sound rather mundane is actually a real experience – and one that’s sure to give you goosebumps!
Opening hours of Bodega Julián in Puerto de la Cruz
Bodega Julián is not a Michelin-starred restaurant, nor does it aspire to be one. However, anyone wishing to sample regional cuisine of a high standard should definitely give this little restaurant at 20 Calle Mequinez in Puerto de la Cruz a try. It is open Monday to Saturday from 6 pm to 11 pm. It is closed on Sundays.
Our tip: The prawn dish is really interesting and tastes absolutely delicious. Serve it with a fruity, local white wine.
