There is plenty to discover at Lago Martiánez in Puerto de la Cruz. Designed by the highly popular architect César Manrique, who was born in the Canary Islands, this open-air swimming pool in the north of Tenerife features numerous whimsical elements. The swimming pool on the town’s promenade is therefore the perfect venue for photo competitions. And that is precisely what Puerto de la Cruz has organised. The best mobile phone photos have now been awarded prizes.

The jury reviewed all the entries and ultimately awarded first prize to Jonay Hernández Rodríguez. Second place went to María de los Ángeles García, and third place went to Jonathan Rodríguez Morales. All the photographs have one thing in common: they show «a unique perspective on this iconic location in Puerto de la Cruz», as the town hall announced.

The initiative was launched by the Costa Martiánez Holiday Complex Department of Puerto de la Cruz Town Council and ‚Excelencia Turística de Canarias‘. On 7 August, participants were set the task of capturing their favourite view of the site using their smartphones. The judging panel subsequently had a great many entries to consider:

According to the judging panel, various criteria were assessed, including creativity, technical skill and originality. The decision also took into account how well the photo could be used in advertising campaigns. Leopoldo Afonso, Mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, was delighted afterwards with the «new perspectives on a place that is part of Puerto de la Cruz’s identity and which never ceases to surprise even those who know it well».

For the town’s mayor, the Martiánez open-air swimming pool is «much more than just a tourist attraction. It is an artistic, scenic and emotional heritage that we must preserve and share.» For Afonso, «initiatives such as these» are important for «bringing this treasure closer to the public and conveying the image of Puerto de la Cruz through the eyes of those who enjoy the town».
