Reader’s poem takes aim at Playa Jardin sewage closure

Writing as Sir Hean, our reader reporter sets out brown foam on the waves, burst pipes said to send untreated waste into the sea, an EU grant for the treatment plant that went astray, and blame later pinned on tourists.

Von Ellen Krauß

The beach is closed today;
if I’m not mistaken –
anything that leaves the gut,
has probably contaminated it.

The waves carry brown foam,
not exactly inviting a swim,
but anyone who swims in it anyway,
will surely come to harm.

Pipes are said to have burst here,
which, for reasons as yet unknown,
are now discharging everything into the sea,
which is what has brought us to this.

When the EU grant
for the sewage treatment plant arrived,
very little was left for the intended purpose,
because everyone took their share.

Ignored, even though it was known,
it was never rectified,
the consequences were not recognised,
and it was constantly put off.

No one could say
who was responsible for this.
It’s the tourists‘ fault,
who leave their rubbish here.

The blame was quickly pinned,
and the solution was very convenient:
that rubbish, imported,
was the cause of the fault!
