Weather in Costa Calma: Wind and sunshine
Fuerteventura certainly lives up to its name around Costa Calma. The village, situated in the east of this narrow strip of land, connects the Jandía peninsula with the rest of the island. Costa Calma is a sort of holiday resort. It is mainly tourists who have settled there, as the weather is considered to be the driest in the south of Fuerteventura.
At its narrowest point, the strip of land is only a few kilometres wide, and the trade winds blow unimpeded across it. This is precisely what makes the Sotavento lagoon one of the best-known spots for windsurfers and kitesurfers. Swimming is also possible on the wide beaches, but the swell should not be underestimated. The same applies to the wind, which has a significant impact on the perceived temperature.
Costa Calma is situated at the narrowest point of Fuerteventura, a little way above the Sotavento lagoon. It is the reason why Costa Calma is famous beyond the island: at high tide, a wide, shallow stretch of water forms behind the sandbank, which disappears again at low tide. Surfers find water shallow enough to stand in when the trade winds are strong. This combination makes the spot particularly special for surfers.
Near the village, the beach is wide and the water is shallow at the water’s edge. Further south, towards the lagoon, there is a tidal pool: the water there appears and disappears at times.
The data available for the south of Fuerteventura is too limited to allow for a multi-year climate analysis. However, the daily figures shown above are taken from a forecast point in the region, meaning that the weather information we present is reliable – both for Costa Calma and for neighbouring Morro Jable.
