As part of the subsidised housing scheme in Lanzarote, the Canary Islands Housing Institute is taking over 42 flats in Playa Blanca.

The residential complex is situated in Yaiza, at 7 Calle Polonia, on plot AB5 in the Montaña Roja housing development, and is being handed over by the Lanzarote Island Council. This is based on a decision by the Institute dated 15 September, as documented in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands.

On 5 June 2024, the two bodies signed a framework agreement on housing measures, followed on 16 December 2024 by the agreement on the purchase of the flats in Yaiza. The Island Council subsequently had the flats registered in its name. Three further provisions relate to funding, energy supply and vocational training:

The Canary Islands increase financial assistance for young first-time buyers

The Canary Islands Housing Institute is increasing the funding pot for young homebuyers by 1,507,709 euros, bringing the total to 4,507,709 euros. No new applications can be submitted. Only applications received by the deadline as part of the call for applications on 7 April will be considered.

In 2026, the funding will be allocated through a competitive process. The decision to increase the funding is published here.

Gran Canaria: Solar panel system at the Hotel Costa Meloneras

North of the GC-1 at kilometre 49 on Gran Canaria, Maspalomas Resort is planning a photovoltaic plant with a rated output of 5,196 kilowatts. The electricity it generates is initially intended to supply the Hotel Costa Meloneras exclusively; there are no plans to feed it into the grid.

The plan is to install 10,002 modules, which are expected to generate an estimated 10,441,622 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. Before construction can begin, Maspalomas Resort must submit an environmental monitoring programme. In addition, the site must be surveyed for protected animals, invasive species and the California chain snake. The environmental decision can be read here.

Canary Islands: Health and Safety Certificates for Construction Graduates

Upon completion of their studies, graduates of five construction-related vocational training programmes at vocational colleges in the Canary Islands may apply for a certificate confirming that they have completed more than 60 hours of basic training in health and safety at work. If the courses are delivered through a blended learning format or online, at least 20 teaching hours must be delivered in person.

The regulations governing the advanced training programme in occupational risk prevention stipulate that a certificate must be awarded for more than 300 hours of study at the intermediate level of occupational health and safety. The Education Inspectorate advises school management and monitors compliance with the requirements. The regulations can be found here.
