The Vice-President of the Canary Islands Government, Manuel Domínguez (PP), stated on Monday that, with the calling of a general election, the Spanish people can take control of the future of a country «that was adrift, in chaos, subject to outside forces and heading for utter failure».

Manuel Domínguez, who is also the president of the PP in the Canary Islands, told journalists that today is an important day for Spain as a whole and for the Canary Islands in particular, following a period in which it has become clear that a government without a majority and without a budget «leads our country, and our Autonomous Community in particular, into chaos».

«Governing without a budget means being unable to fulfil commitments to autonomous communities» such as the Canary Islands, continued Domínguez, who called for whatever happens on 29 November «to be respected by each and every one of those represented in the Upper and Lower Houses, but equally by each and every citizen».

General election: Domínguez calls for a transparent and objective election campaign

He expressed his hope that during the election campaign «the shrill rhetoric, the rowdiness and the confrontation will be set aside», and that «what we want for Spain’s future» can be presented to the public with absolute transparency and clarity.

In this regard, he has pointed out that there have recently been «some manoeuvres» on the part of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, in an attempt to gain «a slight advantage before taking to the pitch», and that the courts have also put a stop to some of these actions; he therefore believes that the elections «should be as transparent as possible».

«These will not be simple or easy times, but rather a complex period ‚in which we will see everything that is as yet unknown‘,» said Domínguez, who urged people to «approach these upcoming elections with their heads, not their hearts or their gut».

Canary Islands: Domínguez reaffirms agreement with Coalición Canaria

As for the Canary Islands agenda, Manuel Domínguez recalled that, at the time, the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, signed an agreement with Coalición Canaria which, he said, «is fully respected and he would sign it again without a doubt».

He also expressed his conviction that the by-elections would not affect the municipal, regional and island elections that may be held in May 2027; indeed, he considered that the only party likely to be adversely affected was the PSOE at local level because «everyone in the Socialist Party knows that aligning themselves with Pedro Sánchez was an absolute failure».
