On Friday, the Maritime Rescue Service rescued a cayuco carrying 109 people, including 32 women and 16 minors, which was spotted sailing 8 miles off the island of El Hierro, according to sources from the emergency services who spoke to EFE.
The makeshift vessel has been rescued by the Salvamar Navia, which escorted it to the port of La Restinga on the island of El Hierro.
It appears that the cayuco had been at sea for eleven days and that there were people on board from The Gambia and Guinea-Conakry.

According to emergency services sources, the cayuco, which had been at sea for eight days since setting sail from Gunjur in The Gambia, was carrying people from The Gambia, Senegal and Guinea-Conakry, and two of its occupants were taken to the island’s hospital.
