Anyone holding the personalised bus pass «Bono Residente Canario-Bono Normal» will be able to travel by bus free of charge on El Hierro in 2026. Similar schemes are also in place on Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

The details of the free travel scheme on El Hierro are agreed between the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility and the Island Council. The latter may set both the conditions for the travel pass and a minimum number of regular journeys. The agreement is published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands.

The government is allocating 120 million euros for free public transport on the Canary Islands. Initially, 78 million euros will be paid as an advance, with a further 42 million euros to follow the following year. The Directorate-General for Transport and Mobility is to allocate the funds based on the number of journeys recorded in the previous year. El Hierro is responsible for settling the costs and must retain the ticket records for at least five years. Three further agreements cover free bus passes on Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and La Graciosa.

Fuerteventura: The Bono Residente Canario remains completely free of charge

On Fuerteventura, a 100 per cent discount has been in place since 23 September for the personalised «Bono Residente Canario». This state-funded scheme is coordinated by the Ministry and the Island Council of Fuerteventura.

Season tickets and multi-journey tickets for public transport in the Canary Islands have been available free of charge since 2023. In accordance with the Ministry’s guidelines, Fuerteventura’s Island Council must provide evidence of the actual costs and settle the accounts. The agreement is published here.

Gran Canaria: Three bus season tickets remain free of charge

The «Bono Residente Canario», the «Bono Residente Wawa Joven» and the «Bono Residente Oro» remain free of charge in Gran Canaria. The scheme has been in place since 23 September.

The Gran Canaria Island Council determines the terms of use and the minimum number of journeys required for season tickets. Usage is recorded by the island’s transport authority, which also provides evidence of the actual expenditure. The regulations can be found here.

Lanzarote and La Graciosa: Bus travel remains free of charge

The personalised «Bono Residente Canario» has continued to be free of charge in Lanzarote since 23 September. The Ministry and the Island Council of Lanzarote and La Graciosa determine how funds for city buses and intercity buses are allocated, monitored and accounted for.

As a general rule, the allocation of available funds amongst the Island Councils is to be based on the number of journeys recorded in the previous year using subsidised tickets. The Island Councils of Lanzarote and La Graciosa must provide evidence of the costs incurred. Following settlement of accounts, the electronic ticket registers must also be retained for at least five years. The resolution can be found here.
