A touch of Italy wafts through the old town of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: that’s because there’s an ice-cream parlour there that’s causing a stir internationally. Anyone who thinks they have to travel to Italy for the best chocolate ice cream in the world will be proven wrong here.
This ice-cream parlour has been recognised by Italy’s renowned restaurant guide, Gambero Rosso. The family business has its roots in Treviso, in northern Italy, where Fabio and Antonella Canzian first discovered their passion for artisan ice cream.
Her son Stefano carried on this tradition and turned the small business into a brand with international appeal. And now, of all places, right in the heart of the Canary Islands.
Chocolate ice cream just like in Italy – on Gran Canaria
„Dassie Gelato“ is located at 36 Calle Triana. The chocolate ice cream is creamy, rich and has won numerous awards. In 2010, it took first place at the Italian national championship; two years later, it was among the finalists at the European championship. And since then, it has been continuously perfected – culminating in its recent recognition by Gambero Rosso as Europe’s top ice cream.
But there is much more on offer: the selection ranges from natural vanilla and mascarpone with hazelnuts and amaretti to surprises such as white chocolate with nuts or ‚Oro Verde‘ with pistachios.
The team demonstrates a love of experimentation with flavours such as chocolate with chilli or the tropical-inspired Polvito Uruguayo. They also serve freshly made milkshakes and granizados, Spanish iced drinks.
Gran Canaria: A family history centred on chocolate ice cream
The story of Dassie began in the 1980s, when Fabio and Antonella Canzian were working at Gelateria Canzian. Their son Stefano grew up learning the trade and took over the well-known ice-cream parlour in Treviso in 2008. With the opening of the branch in Gran Canaria, he has now ventured abroad.
Stefano’s aim is to establish handmade gelato in the upmarket gastronomy sector too. To this end, he relies on traditional production methods, intensive training for his staff and uncompromising quality. After all, Dassie Gelato aims to produce more than just a dessert.
The ice-cream parlour in Las Palmas is open daily from 11 am to 9.30 pm. Anyone strolling down Calle Triana shouldn’t miss this stop.
