Carnival on Tenerife

Puerto de la Cruz brings carnival back for four days in September

The Carnaval de Verano runs from 12 to 15 September 2019, from Plaza Europa to Avenida Colon, with costume contests, samba groups and a float party at Lago Martianez.

The Summer Carnival in Puerto de la Cruz heralds the colourful festivities of the main carnival season. This new carnival kick-off in September has been running since 2016. It has since become an established annual tradition. Here you will find all the information and the latest dates for the Summer Carnival on Tenerife.

Until now, samba groups and parades have heralded the start of the carnival on Tenerife during the winter. Once the food and drink stalls began to spring up around the Plaza del Charco from February onwards, the carnival could not be far off. But in 2016, for the first time, this happened right in the middle of summer. A mistake? No! Puerto de la Cruz had invented the summer carnival.

In order to herald the ‚fifth season‘ a few months earlier and thus drum up support for this spectacular festival, the start of the carnival was promptly brought forward from November to September. For the people of Tenerife, this is a piece of cake; after all, large fiestas are firmly rooted in Tenerife’s culture.

Of course, the Summer Carnival, the Carnaval de Verano, is just a taste of the actual festivities, but it’s still a real treat: from Plaza Europa to Avenida Colón, Puerto de la Cruz celebrates to its heart’s content for three days – colourful costumes and sizzling rhythms included.

For its first edition, the town welcomed 15,000 spectators and participants. Due to the high demand, it was decided shortly after the festival to include the Summer Carnival in Puerto de la Cruz in the town’s official calendar of events.

Summer Carnival on Tenerife – the 2019 programme

This year’s celebrations will take place from 12 to 15 September 2019: On Thursday, 12 September, the Summer Carnival will kick off with a grand carnival parade. Among other things, a „major technical operation“ has been announced. Amongst others, the leading designers of the island’s carnival and the nine queens of Tenerife’s carnival strongholds are set to take part.

On Friday, 13 September, the summer carnival continues at Lago Martiánez. There will be fancy dress competitions, summer dances and, of course, plenty of sizzling rhythms. You can also look forward to lots of small stalls in Puerto de la Cruz.

On Saturday, 14 September, things will once again be colourful and lively during the day. In the evening, the Fiesta del Flotador – or simply the Float Party – gets underway. This time, the event – which proved popular in previous years – will take place at Lago Martiánez.

On Sunday, 15 September, there will be a concert in the morning, aimed at younger guests. ‚Ariann‘, one of Spain’s best-known young influencers, will get the children and teenagers fired up. From late afternoon onwards, there will be a carnival parade featuring the Queen and various samba groups. Afterwards, the grand summer carnival in Puerto de la Cruz will gradually draw to a close.
