Grand Hotel Taoro in Puerto de la Cruz nears five-star reopening

The Cabildo says the 1890 landmark, empty since it closed as the town's casino in 2006, has been gutted and rebuilt for around 35 million euros, with 200 rooms, three heated pools, a wellness centre and several restaurants and bars.

The Grand Hotel Taoro is set to open very soon. This was announced by the Cabildo of Tenerife. This means that, after decades, the Canary Islands will regain their former iconic hotel in Puerto de la Cruz.

The Taoro is set to reopen as a five-star hotel. For the town, this marks not only the return of a legend, but also a significantly modernised hospitality sector.

During the refurbishment work, the Taoro Hotel was completely gutted. Only the historic essence of the building remained. Everything else was completely rebuilt. In this way, it should soon be possible to fulfil almost all of the guests‘ wishes once again.

The Hotel Taoro in Puerto de la Cruz aims to attract affluent guests

Tenerife’s Vice-President and Minister for Tourism, Lope Afonso, has now gone to see the situation for himself on site. Afonso sees the imminent reopening as a major boost for the island’s tourism industry.

According to Afonso, the hotel is intended „not only to attract high-end guests, but also to improve the profitability of tourism in the north of Tenerife.“ Many hotels there are considered to be showing their age. Afonso says: „The renovation will give residents and visitors back a beautiful place steeped in history, reaffirming its status as a landmark for tourism in the Canary Islands.“

Tenerife’s Hotel Taoro to gain 200 modern rooms

The renovation is a joint effort by the Island Council, the Puerto de la Cruz local council and the company Tropical Turística Canaria. The aim was to preserve the building’s original charm whilst creating 200 state-of-the-art rooms. There are also three heated swimming pools, a new wellness centre and various restaurants and bars.

The Gran Hotel Taoro opened in 1890 as Spain’s first luxury hotel. Following a fire in 1929, it had to be extensively rebuilt, but was unable to recapture its former success. Between 1979 and 2006, the Taoro operated as the town’s casino. After that, it stood empty.

Following its reopening, the hotel will be operated by „My Way Hotels“ and managed by Tropical Turística Canaria. The refurbishment cost around 35 million euros.
