In a spectacular show, as is customary, Judit López García was crowned Carnival Queen of Santa Cruz on Wednesday. The young woman from Puerto de la Cruz won over the jury with her „Madame Soleil“ dress. She is now the „Reina“, the figurehead of this year’s carnival in Tenerife, which is considered the second largest in the world.
Tears flow as the name of the 2017 Tenerife Carnival Queen is announced. Judit López García stands on stage in her enormous dress, just like the other contestants, waiting anxiously. Then, of all people, she is called up. The mayor of the capital, Santa Cruz and last year’s Reina present her with the sceptre.
So it’s official: Judit López García has done it. Together with designer Jorge González Santana and sponsor Fuentealta, the young woman from Puerto de la Cruz in the north of Tenerife will be setting the tone this year. She will lead the Corso – the grand carnival parade in the capital – in a dress predominantly in gold.
Her bridal party consists of four bridesmaids: Laura Rodriguez Jorge in the ‚Oración Caribe‘ dress, Samantha Rodriguez Abrante in ‚La Joya‘, Carla Cabrera González in ‚Aguas de Victoria‘ and Shaila Quintero Perdomo in ‚Alba‘.

The dresses are so large that the wearers have to pull them along behind them on a frame. To do this, castors are attached to the underside and the young women are strapped into the frame. These extravagant creations usually weigh around 100 kilograms and are so expensive that they can only be made possible by a sponsor. Furthermore, they are designed over a period of months by one or more designers.
An exciting year now lies ahead for the Queen, with various engagements both at home and abroad. Above all, however, she can look forward to the carnival season, which has already begun in her home country. The Tenerife Carnival is considered the second largest in the world, just behind Rio de Janeiro. The grand parade attracts many thousands of spectators every year. Dozens of samba groups and costumed troupes take part.
