Green North, Sun-Baked South: Tenerife’s Two Faces

Beaches and guaranteed sunshine draw visitors to the arid south, while cloud and humidity feed thousands of plant species in the north. Up to five million holidaymakers come to the island each year.

Tenerife is a destination for beach holidaymakers, those seeking relaxation and party-goers alike. The island shows its visitors two sides. As you fly over the north, the largest of the Canary Islands reveals its rich flora and fauna. When the aeroplane finally touches down at Tenerife South Airport, visitors quickly realise just how powerful the sun over Tenerife is.

The extreme temperatures in the south leave plants with hardly any chance of survival. The only greenery here is usually found on the well-watered golf courses. Yet many tourists love the southern part of Tenerife precisely because of its guaranteed sunshine and wide beaches. The north, on the other hand, is particularly striking for its biodiversity and variety of plant life. Green is the dominant colour there. Find out more about the weather in Tenerife here.

Whilst tourism in the south is geared towards beach and party holidaymakers, the north focuses on relaxation. Of course, there are also numerous – and for the most part beautiful – beaches here, but the island’s geographical features mean that the north experiences more cloud cover and, consequently, higher humidity. The almost tropical conditions in summer allow thousands of plant species to grow and thrive in the north. They give this part of the island its ‚green character‘. No wonder that one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world is located here.

Over the years, the island has become a real tourist magnet. Every year, up to five million tourists spend their holidays in Tenerife, the largest of the 13 Canary Islands.
