Water quality and beaches in San Bartolomé de Tirajana today

There are ten official bathing zones in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The rating is based on our own calculation: it takes in the health authority laboratory readings with the waste water discharges nearby and the conditions of recent days. It is not an official verdict.

Weather in Maspalomas: the dry south of Gran Canaria

Maspalomas is situated on the southern tip of Gran Canaria, just behind the island’s mountain range. The trade winds blow in from the north-east and therefore strike the northern side. Most of the moisture is left there, whilst dry air reaches the south. The fact that there is a shifting sand dune directly behind the beach is one of many signs of this climate.

The difference compared with the island’s capital is considerable: it is much cloudier there. Anyone holidaying in Maspalomas who plans to spend a day in the north should bear this in mind. It is rarely warmer in other parts of this sunny island than it is in the south.

The weather station is situated by the dunes, three kilometres from the town centre and just six metres above sea level. As a result, it usually records slightly cooler temperatures than the station in the town centre: there is a sea breeze on the beach and no tarmac to heat up.

The climate in Maspalomas

The average temperature is 21 degrees. There is therefore only a very small difference of 5.6 degrees between the coolest month, January, at 18.2 degrees, and the warmest month, August, at 23.8 degrees. Rain also falls almost exclusively during the winter months. The total rainfall is 67 millimetres. June brings between zero and 0.2 millimetres of rainfall, whilst December averages 18.7 millimetres. This is also the reason why the landscape looks the way it does.
