Weather in Playa del Inglés: the dry south of Gran Canaria
Playa del Inglés is situated on the southern tip of Gran Canaria, close to the island’s mountain range. The trade winds blow from the north-east, leaving their moisture on the northern side. In the south, where Playa del Inglés is located, it remains dry. The town lies close to the Maspalomas dunes, which are a visible reflection of this climate.
The difference compared with the island’s capital is considerable: the north-east coast is much more frequently overcast. However, anyone holidaying in the south around Playa del Inglés who decides to spend a day in the north should bear this difference in mind when choosing what to wear.
Playa del Inglés is a separate forecasting point for the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET). The fact that Maspalomas and San Agustín have their own readings, despite their proximity, is down to their orientation. The readings are regularly one to two degrees higher than those at the edge of the dunes in Maspalomas. This is because the resort is more exposed to the sun and better sheltered from the sea breeze.
