Puerto Rico is the sunny bay of Mogán on Gran Canaria. The village lies on the south-west coast of the ‚Sunny Island‘, at the mouth of a ravine. The municipality of Mogán is considered the sunniest spot on Gran Canaria, and this is down to its location: the mountain range behind it blocks the trade winds, whilst the bay also opens out towards the south.

Anyone coming from the north will notice the difference even on the way here: a blanket of clouds hangs over the mountains, but it clears as you pass over the pass. So if you’re planning a beach holiday, you’ll be in excellent hands here.

The climate in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria

The average temperature is 21.4 degrees. February, at 19 degrees, is considered the coolest month, whilst August, at 24.2 degrees, is the warmest. That’s a difference of just 5.2 degrees. There’s hardly any rain in summer. Annual rainfall totals 47 millimetres. October, with 12.6 millimetres, is the wettest month. The landscape looks correspondingly arid.

Beach weather in Puerto Rico, Gran Canaria

Playa de los Amadores is an artificial bay situated to the west of the town centre. The water is calm and usually pleasant. The municipality of Mogán manages eleven official bathing areas, including Playa de Puerto Rico itself, Playa de Tauro and Playa de la Verga near Anfi del Mar. The bay is flanked on both sides by steep Barranco cliffs. This shields the area from the wind. A coastal path leads round the western headland to Playa de los Amadores. There are also excursion boats to Puerto de Mogán and Arguineguín.
