Carnival on Tenerife

Düsseldorf delegation set to return to Puerto de la Cruz carnival

A four-decade exchange built on an official friendship agreement stalled when the sponsor for the flights disappeared. A first backer for a batch of tickets has now been found, and local hosts will again cover the hotel costs of the official delegation.

For 40 years, the Düsseldorf Carnival Committee (CC) had flown to Tenerife after the carnival season in Düsseldorf for a follow-up trip. Then, however, they called a halt to the tradition. But in 2016, the partnership could be revived.

As part of this carnival collaboration, the carnival revellers have been visiting each other for the carnival parade for over four decades. Then, two years ago, it suddenly came to an end. But next year, the Düsseldorf Carnival Prince and his entourage are likely to fly to the Carnival and Flower Parade in Puerto de la Cruz again with a larger delegation. Düsseldorf’s Lord Mayor is also said to be backing the plan and is even considering attending in person.

Düsseldorf’s Carnival Prince returns to the parade on Tenerife

For more than 40 years, there was an exchange between the carnival revellers on the Canary Islands and the Düsseldorf revellers, which was even accompanied by an official friendship agreement. The Düsseldorfers flew out on Ash Wednesday itself, when in some parts of Tenerife the carnival celebrations really get into full swing.

Four years ago, the CC cancelled the Düsseldorf team’s flight to the island. The crux of the matter was that there was no longer a sponsor for the tickets, which had previously been provided by LTU and later by Air Berlin.

The deeply disappointed Kanarios nevertheless went ahead with their participation in the Düsseldorf Rose Monday parade, accompanied by their Flower Queen and a delegation. Behind the scenes, the carnival revellers – notably the Honour Guard, which was founded on Tenerife – made every effort to revive the partnership between the two sides.

And now it seems that a first sponsor has even been found to cover a number of flight tickets. The name is due to be announced in a few days‘ time. As in the past, the people of Tenerife will cover the hotel costs for the official delegation, meaning that the financial burden on the Düsseldorf delegation will remain within reasonable limits.

Düsseldorf to have its own float at the Puerto Carnival again

If all goes well, the future Düsseldorf prince and princess will also be taking part in next year’s flower parade with their own float. Incidentally, this also brings significant marketing benefits for Düsseldorf, as the colourful parades on Tenerife are broadcast on television in many countries.

And for Puertos‘ Carnival, Düsseldorf’s decision to reverse its decision to withdraw signifies the recognition that Tenerife’s – and, in particular, Puertos‘ – carnival has deserved for at least 40 years.
