Carnival on Tenerife

New York theme wins public vote for Santa Cruz Carnival 2023

The online ballot run by OAFAR gave "New York, the city that never sleeps" 1,730 votes, or 44.6 per cent, ahead of "La Televisión" and a sustainability theme. The carnival runs from 20 January to 26 February 2023.

The vote count was initially a neck-and-neck race, but it soon became clear that there was a winner for the theme of the Tenerife Carnival 2023. There were three suggestions to choose from. One of them lost by a clear margin.

When it comes to sustainability, the Canary Islands have some catching up to do. This is evident not only from the impending fine running into millions due to incorrect waste sorting (more on this here). Even in the context of Carnival – where, as is well known, almost anything goes – Tenerife has sent a clear signal that goes against the current trend.

In the contest to choose from the three proposed carnival themes, ‚A Sustainable World‘ ultimately lost by a clear margin. This proposal received just 593 votes, meaning it came third and was eliminated.

Interest was considerably greater when it came to the topic of television. No wonder, then, that „La Televisión“ received 1,557 votes. However, even that wasn’t enough to secure first place.

This is the Carnival theme for Tenerife in 2023

The winning theme received 1,730 of the valid votes. This meant that, in the end, 44.6 per cent voted in favour of it. And so it is now certain that the 2023 Carnival on Tenerife will be held under the theme „New York – the city that never sleeps“.

This was the result of the online poll commissioned by the capital’s city council and carried out by the Autonomous Organisation for Festivals and Leisure Activities (OAFAR).

The councillor responsible, Alfonso Cabello, expressed his satisfaction. He said he felt „delighted by the decision“. The mayor of Santa Cruz also pointed out that, following the long hiatus from carnival celebrations, „it is now time to breathe new life into the shortest break in history“.

Just a six-month break between two years of carnival on Tenerife

This refers to this year’s carnival, which was postponed until the summer, and which is now returning to its normal cycle after just a few months‘ break. This presents „an organisational challenge“, but one which they feel they are up to.

Cabello sees it as „good news“ that „a festival of international tourist interest“ is finally taking place again, „both for carnival-goers and for the parade and the economic vitality of Santa Cruz de Tenerife“.

Tenerife Carnival 2023 – what’s next

The next step will be to design the official poster. It has been announced that the public will once again be involved in this process.

The carnival on Tenerife will take place from 20 January to 26 February 2023. The highlight will be the grand carnival parade, in which many thousands of people will take part and even more visitors are expected to line the streets.
