Los Gigantes takes its name from the second-highest sea cliffs in Europe. The „Acantilados de Los Gigantes“ („Cliffs of the Giants“) rise steeply up to 450 metres from the Atlantic Ocean and are within walking distance. Just below these gigantic basalt columns lies „Playa de los Guios“, a stunning beach of black lava sand.
Los Gigantes Travel Guide – Active holidays and plenty of beach time
What’s more, the sea off Los Gigantes is an adventure in itself: divers and snorkelling enthusiasts can discover a fascinating underwater world there. Even in shallow water, the first sights can be found, whilst from a depth of around 25 metres, a veritable underwater splendour awaits explorers. A major diving competition is also held every year.
Right on the other side – that is, above the cliffs – even those who aren’t keen on water sports will find plenty to enjoy. From the „Mirador de Archipenque“ viewpoint, on a clear day, the view stretches all the way to „Punta de Teno„, the westernmost point of Tenerife (more information and photos can be found here). In addition, the Canary Islands of La Gomera and La Palma are clearly visible in the distance.
The Guanches, the indigenous people of Tenerife, regarded Los Gigantes as a sort of barrier to hell. To them, the cliffs represented an almost insurmountable obstacle. But back to the here and now: Los Gigantes can be reached via the TF-47 coastal road.
Sunny weather in Los Gigantes
With an average of more than 300 days of sunshine a year, the town is an ideal holiday destination for sun-seeking Tenerife holidaymakers. Los Gigantes also offers a strategically good base for active holidaymakers: the Teno Mountains attract visitors with numerous hiking trails, and the Mount Teide National Park is also easily accessible from there.
In addition, whale-watching tours are available from the harbour in Los Gigantes (Photos of whale watching can be found here). There are also boat trips to the cliffs of Los Gigantes. Visitors can choose between sailing boats, catamarans and yachts.
Incidentally, the harbour is the main reason why Los Gigantes has, over time, grown together with the neighbouring town of Puerto de Santiago. Both towns now attract mainly British visitors. The guaranteed sunshine and the mild climate all year round have drawn many British nationals to the flats and houses in this town in the west of Tenerife.
