The president of the Gran Canaria Island Council, Antonio Morales, clarified on Friday that he has not left Nueva Canarias and that he is not a member of Primero Canarias, the party that emerged from the split led by the mayors of Agüimes and Gáldar, Óscar Hernández and Teodoro Sosa.
«I stood for election to the Gran Canaria Island Council on behalf of a political organisation (NC) which I have not left. I have not abandoned it,» Morales stated in an interview with Radio Canaria.
The veteran politician has clarified, however, that he is not a member of Nueva Canarias‘ governing bodies and that he is still trying to ensure that «the situation that arose at the time», the Primero Canarias split, does not affect the Cabildo’s administration.

«I am devoted heart and soul to the Cabildo. I have not left, nor have I abandoned that organisation,» he added.
Antonio Morales pointed out that he did not, in fact, belong to Nueva Canarias as such, but rather to one of its local allied parties, Roque Aguayro, one of the groups that subsequently spearheaded the split.
«I am critical of some of the decisions that Roque Aguayro has taken and is taking, but I am fully committed to the running of the Gran Canaria Island Council,» he insisted.
