The PP’s spokesperson in Congress, Ester Muñoz, stated on Saturday that the PSOE is heading into the general election without any proposals and is therefore basing its campaign on «stoking fear» over the possibility of a right-wing government, in contrast to the People’s Party, which, she asserted, wants to focus the debate on the issues affecting the public.

Muñoz took part in a pre-campaign event in Fuerteventura alongside the president of the PP in the Canary Islands and regional vice-president, Manuel Domínguez, and the president of the PP in Fuerteventura, Jéssica de León, as part of the campaign for the elections on 29 November.

«There are parties such as the Socialist Party and Pedro Sánchez who have no proposals; that is why they have to spend all day fuelling a campaign of fear about whether the right will come to power,» Muñoz argued.

PP: Muñoz calls for tax cuts to counter the effects of inflation

In response to this, she has stated that the PP aims to offer «a change» focused on issues such as housing, immigration, security and taxation, and has argued that the election campaign should put politicians‘ problems on the back burner in order to tackle those faced by the public.

Muñoz has blamed Pedro Sánchez’s government for the deterioration which, in her view, living standards have undergone over the last eight years, and has stated that it is now more difficult to make ends meet, find a place to live, change cars or go on holiday.

She has also argued that child poverty and energy poverty continue to rise, and has called for a tax cut to offset the impact of inflation on wages and pensions.

«We must lower taxes for the public; it is unacceptable that inflation should eat away at the wages and pensions of our elderly,» said the People’s Party leader, who criticised the PSOE for choosing to increase tax revenue rather than, in her view, alleviating the situation of the most vulnerable families.

Among other measures, she pointed out that the PP has called for a reduction in taxes on basic foodstuffs and argued that these proposals are the reason why her party is aiming to form a government following the elections.

Muñoz has also contrasted what she sees as Sánchez’s personal and political problems with the concerns of the public, and has stated that on 29 November, voters will have to decide «whether Pedro Sánchez’s life improves or whether the lives of the Spanish people improve, because both cannot improve at the same time».

Canary Islands: Domínguez calls for Frontex to be deployed as part of migration policy

For his part, the regional president of the PP, Manuel Domínguez, devoted much of his speech to the migration situation in the Canary Islands and accused the central government of adopting a «passive» policy towards arrivals by sea.

He has called for the deployment of Frontex and the Armed Forces, as well as increased resources for the Guardia Civil and the National Police, and greater cooperation with countries of origin and transit.
