The mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias (PSOE), says her party is ready to stand in the general election on 29 November «and continue to improve people’s lives»; and, regarding her possible inclusion on a list of candidates for the Congress of Deputies, she emphasises that she has already served in Madrid.
After presenting a development of 115 affordable rental homes funded by the City Council she chairs, the former Minister for Health stated that the PSOE is «best placed to convince the public to once again» place their trust at the ballot box in the party that governs this country, alongside Sumar.
After Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced the snap general election, Darias stated that her party’s aim ahead of the election «will be to convince the public to once again support a progressive government so that we can continue to improve people’s lives».
PSOE: Darias defends the election date and housing policy
When asked about the appropriateness of the timing Sánchez had chosen to dissolve Parliament, she said that «if he considers it, so do we» because «it may be a window of opportunity».
Regarding the importance that the issue of access to housing will have in the upcoming election campaign, Carolina Darias has emphasised that this matter «is part of our daily lives», referring to the work carried out by the City Council she chairs.
«We have made it a priority to improve people’s lives, which is what we have been striving to do from the very moment I took office as mayor. The positions are clear: there are those who believe that the right to housing should be affordable and accessible to the citizens of this country, and there are political parties that prefer to focus on or favour property owners over the residents themselves,» she said.
In his view, on these issues «the proposals are clear», although he believes it will also be necessary to «discuss other matters, such as the rights and the far right», and «how we must be able to halt the rise of extremism in this country», given «the consequences this may have for the public and ordinary people on the street».
When asked about her willingness to head the PSOE’s electoral list for the Congress of Deputies in Las Palmas, the councillor and former minister stated that she is «very comfortable and very happy» where she is, and that her place «is at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council», where «she would like to continue».
