The Canary Islands Government’s Directorate-General for Emergencies has declared a state of alert on the island of La Palma following a widespread power failure recorded on Monday at 06:42, which has resulted in a complete power cut and the total loss of electricity supply across the island.

According to information provided by the Emergency Services, the purpose of activating the alert is to monitor how the situation develops, facilitate coordination between the relevant authorities and organisations, and assess any potential impact on essential services, whilst working to restore the supply gradually.

The power cut has affected the whole of the island of La Palma, where there has been a complete interruption to the electricity supply.

La Palma: Contingency plan coordinates response to power cut

The declaration was made pursuant to the Territorial Civil Protection Emergency Plan for the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PLATECA), approved by Decree 98/2015 of 22 May.

The Directorate-General for Emergencies is therefore keeping the monitoring and coordination mechanisms set out in the PLATECA in place in response to this type of incident.

Fernando Clavijo warns against travelling and flooded areas

The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has stated that he is closely monitoring the situation on La Palma, where no injuries have been reported so far, although there have been incidents related to waterlogging as a result of the rainfall.

In light of the heavy rain that fell in the early hours of the morning and the power cut, which has left the island without electricity, Clavijo has asked the public to take every possible precaution, avoid non-essential travel, refrain from crossing flooded areas and minimise car use.

He also urged people to follow the instructions issued by the 112 Canarias Emergency and Security Coordination Centre and the emergency services whilst efforts continue to deal with the adverse weather conditions and the widespread power cut on the island.
