Siblings Ari and Tito, descendants of a family of German emigrants, have realised their dream within the ancient monastery walls, high above the rooftops of Puerto de la Cruz in the north of Tenerife. With the restaurant Tito’s, they have created an oasis of culinary delights amidst the hustle and bustle between the TF-5 motorway and the tourist hub of Puerto de la Cruz.
The siblings have since sold the restaurant and reopened it elsewhere. Yet the duo’s vision lives on within the monastery walls. Visitors to this tranquil restaurant can choose between a table in the beautifully maintained garden or inside the building. And both areas have their own charm.
Whilst outside a small pond and an abundance of plants invite you to relax, the restaurant inside entices guests with an unobstructed view of the wine cellar behind the glass and a fireplace for cooler days. What’s more, tasteful music creates just the right atmosphere for sampling one of the many wines on offer.
Our tips for Titos Bodeguita in Puerto de la Cruz
The menu features plenty of Canary Islands specialities, salads and surprises. Alongside the usual ham and cheese platters, you’ll find dishes such as ‚Prawns in Parmesan sauce with diced courgette‘ (€9.50 – highly recommended) or ‚Tuna tartare with avocado‘ (€9.90), which is so fresh that even die-hard fish-haters will be won over. Another real must-try: „Beef cheeks with garlic potatoes“ (€14.40).
You don’t have to be a wine drinker to enjoy yourself at Tito’s, but the very well-stocked wine cellar invites you to explore a selection of local and international wines. Under the Tenerife sun, the local wines are, of course, particularly recommended. White wine is especially worth trying. As for red wine, the Canary Islands are getting better and better, but there is still room for improvement.
Even the house wines at Tito’s are of good quality. However, a better choice for a white wine is the Muscat ‚Brumas de Ayosa afrutado‘ (€15.50) from Güímar in south-east Tenerife. It is characterised by a particularly fruity note and is pleasant even when drunk in direct sunlight. As for red wine, the Ribera del Duero from local winemaker Doble R. (€13.50) is a real gem, despite the criticism mentioned. However, it is not always in stock.
Tito’s can seat up to 210 people across four separate areas. However, visitors are advised to book in advance, as the popular garden tables fill up quickly.
