Teneriffa News has analysed 34 airlines for you. The aim: to assess punctuality at Canary Islands airports in August. All departures were included in this assessment, including inter-island flights. Here is the ranking.
Discover Airlines, formerly Eurowings Discover, recorded the poorest performance: of 64 departures, only 29.7 per cent were on schedule. On average, flights took off 25 minutes and 29 seconds late. In our analysis, a departure is considered on time if it is no more than 15 minutes late.
SmartWings accounted for the longest total delay, at 32 minutes and 28 seconds across 54 flights. Its on-time performance rate stood at 38.9 per cent. In July, the airline had recorded a total delay of 22 minutes and 6 seconds and an on-time performance rate of 53.1 per cent. The biggest decline was recorded by another airline.
Flights to the Canary Islands: Canaryfly tops the punctuality rankings in August
Luxair saw the most significant deterioration month-on-month: the average delay rose from 15 minutes to 31:37 minutes. The on-time departure rate slipped from 59.2 to 38.2 per cent. Volotea, by contrast, saw an improvement: delays fell from 22:55 to 10:05 minutes and the on-time rate rose from 65.5 to 80.3 per cent.
Iberia topped the list for cancellations: 3.6 per cent of its flights were cancelled entirely.
The average deviation takes into account all delays across an airline’s flights. A single extremely delayed departure may therefore significantly inflate the figure. The on-time performance rate, on the other hand, shows how often the flight schedule was adhered to. Canaryfly leads the way in both categories and has even improved: in July, the airline had a delay of 6 minutes and 40 seconds and an on-time performance rate of 82.3 per cent.
There can also be a significant discrepancy between the two columns. For example, Norwegian is well ahead in terms of odds, but does not even feature in the top ten when it comes to average deviation. Conversely, Naysa is significantly further ahead in terms of deviation than it is in terms of odds.

The figures are based on departure data from the Canary Islands‘ airports in August. Once again this month, only airlines operating at least 40 flights were included in the analysis.
Incidentally, delays at airports in the Canary Islands can also be caused by external factors. Last year, flight operations on El Hierro had to be scaled back in the middle of the peak season due to a shortage of air traffic controllers.
In the July analysis, the route from Fuerteventura to Málaga came out on top, whilst the flights from Gran Canaria to Katowice recorded the highest average delay. These analyses will also be published in the coming days for August.
