Heatwave warning: The height of summer is returning to the Canary Islands

The meteorological start of autumn has already passed. And yet, the Canary Islands are set to experience another spell of high summer weather. The archipelago is kicking off the week with temperatures of up to 37 degrees. It is set to remain hot until at least Wednesday.

Temperatures of over 30 degrees were already being recorded in the early hours of Monday morning. For example, Agüimes on Gran Canaria recorded 30.7 degrees shortly after four o’clock. It cannot be a case of a single faulty thermometer, as just a few minutes later the temperature in San Bartolomé de Tirajana was 29.5 degrees. Other stations belonging to the state meteorological service AEMET in the Canary Islands also recorded similar figures.

The highest temperatures were therefore all recorded in Gran Canaria. Parts of the island are the only region in the Canary Islands to be placed on an orange alert. And it’s set to get hot elsewhere too:

The Canary Islands are expecting midsummer weather at the start of autumn

The AEMET issued no fewer than four heat warnings for the Canary Islands from 10.00 am on Monday. At the start of the week, the heat is sweeping across the Canary Islands from the east. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are expecting temperatures of up to 34 degrees Celsius. In the south of Tenerife, temperatures will reach up to 34. Gran Canaria is expected to see up to 36 degrees in the higher elevations and, in the south, the weekly record of 37 degrees.

Heat warnings are already in place for all the islands as early as Tuesday : the AEMET is forecasting temperatures of up to 38 degrees in the south, west and east of Gran Canaria. Temperatures of up to 36 degrees are expected in Lanzarote and in the south, west and east of Tenerife. The other forecasts remain unchanged. However, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro will be added to the list, with temperatures there also reaching up to 36 degrees. The north-west of Tenerife is expected to reach 34 degrees.

The intense heat is expected to fall back below the threshold for widespread warnings as early as Wednesday. Gran Canaria will remain the only island under a weather warning, with temperatures still expected to reach 34 in the south, west and east. The rest of the archipelago can still expect high summer temperatures. According to AEMET, Fuerteventura will still reach up to 33 degrees, Tenerife up to 32 and the western islands up to 29 degrees.
