Canary Islands fund a fresh makeover for Puerto de la Cruz

Puerto de la Cruz is set for yet another facelift. The town in the north of Tenerife has already undergone several rounds of refurbishment and redevelopment. Now it is time for another round. The regional government of the Canary Islands has approved the next phase of modernisation.

Implementation will be jointly managed by the Island Council Tenerife’s and the Government of the Canary Islands. The regional parliament has now approved the joint agreement on this matter. The second modernisation plan for the port city in the north of Tenerife is therefore binding on both parties.

The notice was published in the Canary Islands Official Gazette on Thursday, the latest edition of the BOC. The notice approves separate plans that set out the sums, deadlines and individual projects in greater detail.

The Canary Islands are renovating key tourist destinations

In the Canary Islands, modernisation plans such as this are frequently used as a means of upgrading tourist destinations in terms of buildings and infrastructure. Puerto de la Cruz is a good example of this work, as the town experienced a veritable renaissance in the early 2000s and 2010s following decades of neglected regeneration projects.

Many streets and squares have been refurbished, subsequently attracting both local residents and tourists once again. Other parts of the town, as well as areas that were renovated some time ago, now require further modernisation. The second plan is designed to address this.

Construction project in the port of Arinaga on Gran Canaria

Another example is the modernisation of Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca on Lanzarote, which is following the same pattern. Further agreements between the Island Council and the regional government are also currently shaping projects across the archipelago – from education to energy supply. Added to this is a project for the port of Arinaga on Gran Canaria. In the same issue of the BOC, the way was paved for the expansion of the terminal for bitumen and emulsions there.

The Canary Islands‘ Ministry of the Environment has given the green light to the environmental impact assessment for the project. This meant that the public notice for the construction project in the east of the Canary Islands could also be published on Friday.
