The Canary Islands exported 24,347 tonnes of bananas in July. This was just under three-quarters more than in the same month last year. Figures from the statistics office ISTAC show that almost the entire volume remained within Spain.
Mainland Spain accounted for 24,132 tonnes, whilst only 215 tonnes of the harvest were exported. Less than one per cent of Canary Islands bananas therefore left the country.
The strongest growth was recorded in El Hierro, where banana production more than doubled in July. In the Canary Islands‘ foreign trade as a whole, however, July saw a trend in the opposite direction.
Canary Islands: More bananas but falling export value
Just how much individual islands can influence the statistics became apparent following the eruption of the Tajogaite volcano on La Palma. The island’s most important agricultural sector was abruptly paralysed as a result. The recovery of the banana industry on La Palma took a long time.
According to figures from the statistics office ISTAC, the value of all goods exported from the Canary Islands stood at 343.9 million euros. This represents a 3.7 per cent fall in the archipelago’s exports compared with the previous year.
