Puerto de la Cruz

Surf waves and 5.1 million euros for Playa Martianez

The man-made beach at the eastern end of Puerto de la Cruz sits at a 90 degree angle to the Atlantic behind breakwaters, creating waves for beginners and improvers alike. A lifeguard is on duty during the day.

The eastern end of the promenade in Puerto de la Cruz is marked by Playa Martianez. This artificially created beach is protected by breakwaters and lies at a 90-degree angle to the Atlantic Ocean. The beach’s layout is particularly popular with surfers, as the waves created here – depending on the sea conditions – are perfect for both beginners and advanced surfers.

The beach is considerably smaller than Playa Jardin at the other end of town. However, Playa Martianez is set to benefit increasingly from the tourism plan for Puerto de la Cruz. Most recently, around 5.1 million euros from the package of measures were invested to improve the beach. These measures included, for example, the demolition of two old and dilapidated kiosks above the beach.

The beach itself is relatively narrow, but offers enough space for sunbathing. Swimming is also permitted when the waves are calm. A lifeguard is on duty at the beach during the day.
