The Jardin Botanico is regarded as one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in the world. With around 400,000 visitors a year, it is one of Tenerife’s most popular attractions. You should allow at least two hours for a visit to the botanical garden.
In August 1788, the Jardin Botanico was established as an „acclimatisation garden“ by La Orotava. The decree to this effect was issued by King Carlos III himself. According to the decree, plants originating from the tropics were to be centrally collected at a single location in Spain on Tenerife.

The best climate for this project was identified in the north of Tenerife. To cultivate the plants, the „Jardin Botánico“ – now known as the Botanical Garden – was finally built in 1790. The numerous plant species have been catalogued since the end of the 18th century.

In 1983, the garden was finally transferred to the Autonomous Government of the Canary Islands. The latter, in turn, handed over responsibility to the Centre for Agricultural Research and Technology of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.
Famous liverwort tree in the Botanical Garden on Tenerife
The Botanical Garden in Puerto de la Cruz boasts a significant collection of tropical and subtropical plants. It is of inestimable value, particularly from an economic perspective. Visitors can admire various species of palms, Bromeliaceae, Araceae and Moraceae.
There are some beautiful plants and trees here which are extremely interesting and admirable due to their age, size, rarity and origin. For example, there is a so-called ‚liverwort tree‘ in the Botanical Garden. The plant lives up to its name particularly in summer, when the flowers – which give it its name – hang down from the tree.
