Garachico in Pictures, from Natural Harbour to Convent Square

Founded in 1496, the northern town thrived as Tenerife's leading port until the 1706 eruption buried much of it, including the harbour basin. Our gallery shows the rebuilt town today.

Franciscan Monastery, Garachico — The convent in Garachico is still run by Franciscan nuns today. There’s usually something going on in the forecourt.

Garachico Market Square — Garachico’s market square is the heart of the town. But there is much more to explore: parks, architecture, culture and, of course, the local cuisine attract tens of thousands of visitors to Garachico every year.

Garachico is one of the most beautiful towns on Tenerife. The town, situated in the north of the Canary Island, was founded in 1496. Shortly afterwards, alongside the seafarers who gathered around the natural harbour, military personnel, clergy, politicians and aristocrats also settled there. The town subsequently flourished and was henceforth regarded as the place to be on Tenerife. That was until a devastating volcanic eruption struck in early May 1706. Buried under masses of lava, large parts of the town were wiped out. The large harbour basin was particularly badly affected. As a result, Puerto de la Cruz flourished. The remaining residents of Garachico made the best of a bad situation and initially turned to fishing and agriculture. However, they soon rebuilt the town, which is now regarded as one of the most beautiful on Tenerife. You can find detailed information about Garachico here.
