Easter on Tenerife: Processions and Passion plays

There are various celebrations in Tenerife during Semana Santa. We’ll show you what you shouldn’t miss in Tenerife during the week leading up to Easter, the most important Catholic festival. You can find pictures of the Good Friday procession in La Laguna here.

In the town centres of all the localities, there are various masses and events taking place around Easter. Processions, Passion plays and other celebrations are advertised by notice in the respective towns. However, there are a number of festivities that you, as a visitor to Tenerife, should not miss.

Good Friday processions

On Good Friday, there are several processions in La Laguna in the north of Tenerife. The smaller ones take place throughout the day, passing through various parts of the university and episcopal city. In the evening, the main Good Friday procession takes place.

During the procession, 24 platforms are carried through the town. These depict the various stations of the Way of the Cross. The procession begins at 5 pm.

Further events on Good Friday in La Laguna:
– 4.00 am: Procession from the Real Santuario del Santísimo Cristo.
– 11.00 am: ‚Lignum Crucis‘ procession from the Church of La Concepción.
– 5.00 pm: Main procession – ‚Procesión Magna‘ from the Cathedral via C/ Obispo Rey Redondo, C/ Ascanio y Nieves, C/ San Agustín, C/ Nava y Grimón, C/ Obispo Rey Redondo and back to the Cathedral.
– 10.00 pm: Silent procession – «Procesión del Silencio» from the Cathedral via C/ Obispo Rey Redondo, Plaza del Adelantado and C/ Santo Domingo to the Church of Santo Domingo de Guzmán.

Passion Plays in Adeje

In Adeje, the island’s largest Passion plays take place on Good Friday in Calle Grande. From 12 noon, more than 300 performers will re-enact the Last Supper, the vigil on the Mount of Olives and, finally, the crucifixion for tens of thousands of visitors.

The performers have been rehearsing for several months for the Adeje Passion Plays. The performance regularly moves large sections of the audience to tears. It is so well known that it is now even broadcast live on television.

Due to the very large crowds, you should allow plenty of time for your journey.

Easter processions

Large processions also take place on Easter Sunday in almost all of Tenerife’s towns and villages. From Puerto de la Cruz via the capital, Santa Cruz, right through to small mountain villages, the faithful gather to celebrate the Resurrection of Christ together. The events include, amongst others:

Santa Cruz: Easter Sunday, 1 April, 1.00 pm: Procession from the Church of San Francisco de Asís.
Puerto de la Cruz: Easter Sunday, 1 April, 11.00 am: Mass. 12.00 noon: Resurrection procession from the Church of Peña de Francia.
La Orotava: Easter Sunday, 1 April, 12.30 pm: Easter Sunday procession from the Church of La Concepción.
Adeje: Easter Sunday, 1 April, 11.00 am: Easter Sunday service at the Church of Santa Úrsula Mártir. 12.00: Easter Sunday Mass at the Church of Jesucristo Redentor (Callao Salvaje). 12.30: Easter Sunday service at the Church of Nuestra Señora del Campo (Fañabé).
