Gran Canaria: Force 2 is close to the monthly average

With a magnitude of 2, the current reading is close to the average for the past 30 days. The Canary Islands also owe their volcanic origins to the seismic activity that the IGN monitors on an ongoing basis.

Among the latest reports from the IGN is also an earthquake at the submarine volcano Enmedio, which lies between Tenerife and Gran Canaria. A series of shallow earthquakes near El Hierro was also recorded.

Tenerife has carried out a volcanic eruption simulation; magma chamber beneath Pico Viejo

On 22 October 2026, the Tenerife Island Council conducted the Volcanex exercise to simulate a volcanic eruption in the south of the island. In Guía de Isora, around 300 residents from Chirche and Aripe were taken to emergency accommodation.

Researchers have identified a large magma chamber beneath Pico Viejo, a subsidiary volcano of Mount Teide. Mount Teide is also at the centre of a study of seismic activity off the coast of Tenerife.
