Puerto de la Cruz pool finished for six months but still shut

The 13 million euro complex next to Playa Jardin is waiting on a final building inspection with no date set, while the beach itself stays closed over contaminated water.

It has been finished for half a year, yet the new outdoor swimming pool in Puerto de la Cruz remains closed. Tenerife has invested 13 million euros in the facility. It is finished – and yet it remains closed.

Since February, Tenerife’s island president has been promising to ‚open the outdoor swimming pool in a few months‘. Almost a year later, this has still not happened.

A political row has now broken out over the outdoor swimming pool built to competition standards. Tenerife’s Social Democrats have issued a statement accusing President Rosa Dávila of failing to keep „her promise that it would be operational by 2024“. There is still no set date:

Tenerife’s new competition-standard swimming pool remains closed

The island’s administration states that the pool could well open, but that the final inspection is still pending. It cannot be opened until this inspection of the entire structure for defects has been carried out.

The new outdoor swimming pool features a 25-metre and a 50-metre pool. There is also space for more than 500 visitors in the modern stands. The facilities include changing rooms, a café, offices and even a first-aid room. All of this covers an area of 6,000 square metres.

Competition-standard: Tenerife’s most modern swimming pool

Puert’s new swimming pool has been built on the site of its predecessor, right next to Playa Jardín. The beach is currently closed due to contaminated water – and will remain so for the time being. Many residents and visitors to the town in the north of the largest Canary Islands therefore have even less patience for the long wait until it opens.

The swimming pool is certified by the International Swimming Federation (FINA). This means that official competitions can also be held there. However, it would first need to be opened.

There is still no specific date set for the final handover. And so residents and visitors to Puerto de la Cruz continue to wait for the go-ahead for Tenerife’s most modern swimming pool.
