The Canary Islands Ministry of Tourism and Employment has announced that it will revise the strategic funding plan for the years 2026 to 2028. The aim is to make grants available to businesses and employees. No specific figures were given at this stage; these are to be set out in separate documents.

The amendment has been published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC) since Monday. A strategic subsidy plan will then set out which funding schemes a department is to launch over a specific period. It will also list the funding objectives and individual recipients.

At present, both the application deadlines and the individual programmes remain to be confirmed by the BOC. Nevertheless, the Ministry is bringing together two areas that are considered to be closely intertwined in the Canary Islands.

Canary Islands: Employment in Tenerife continues to grow

The funding programme runs for three years and therefore also covers businesses that submit their applications at a later date. This is also intended to further boost the labour market in the Canary Islands, which is already showing signs of slight growth.

In the second quarter, the ISTAC Statistics Office in Tenerife recorded 447,920 people in employment, representing a one per cent increase compared with the same quarter of the previous year. In August, 413,915 people were in employment subject to social security contributions, which was 1.3 per cent more than a year earlier.

Another key factor is the training of employees and jobseekers. In Icod de los Vinos, for example, a vocational training centre offering courses for jobseekers is currently being set up. Funding and modernisation schemes such as these are regularly used in the Canary Islands to upgrade the buildings and infrastructure in tourist-oriented towns.

Last week, the government also gave the go-ahead for the second phase of modernisation of Puerto de la Cruz. Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca on Lanzarote will be redeveloped along the same lines. These measures are also intended to improve the quality of life for local residents and, above all, to boost tourism.
