Seven Tenerife gelaterias make the Gelato Festival World Ranking

More than 3,000 ice cream makers across five continents are judged each year. Boutique Relieve leads the island in 85th place worldwide, with its Origen Cacao rated the best flavour in the Canaries.

Among ice-cream parlours, it is regarded as the equivalent of the Michelin Guide for restaurants: the ‚Gelato Festival World Ranking‘ is an annually updated list of the best ice creams. And Tenerife is represented by no fewer than seven ice-cream parlours.

Every year, 3,000 ice-cream parlours compete against one another for the top spots. Five continents are represented. And this year, it wasn’t Italy – a country often associated with the world’s best ice cream – that won.

Although the Canary Islands didn’t make it into the top 10 of the world’s best ice-cream makers, they did achieve some impressive results. Find out who won and which are the best ice-cream parlours in the Canary Islands:

The best ice cream in the world – and in Spain

According to the jury, the world’s best ice cream was made by Adam Fazekas from Hungary. His ice-cream parlour, „Fazekas Cukraszda“ in Budapest, has long since ceased to be an insider’s tip amongst ice-cream lovers. This latest accolade is sure to make the queues even longer.

Spain also did very well: the ice-cream parlour „Veneta Gelato Italiano“ has branches in Valencia and Madrid. Together with „La Cremeria Gelato Italiano“ in Cádiz, they made it into the global top 10. Veneta Gelato Italiano came fifth and La Cremeria Gelato Italiano followed in seventh place.

The best ice-cream parlours in Tenerife

In the Canary Islands, Tenerife bagged no fewer than seven awards. Here are the winners and their rankings:

The „Boutique Relieve“ in Tenerife was ranked 85th worldwide. According to the jury, the „Origen Cacao“ flavour is therefore the best in the Canary Islands. The ice-cream parlour is run by master confectioner and ice-cream maker Alfredo José Marrero Páez. His flavour is made from „organic bean-to-bar“ chocolate. This is a product produced by the same manufacturer from the cocoa bean right through to the finished chocolate.

The best ice cream in the Canary Islands is flavoured not only with a special chocolate made from cocoa husks, but also enriched with various other ingredients. These include crumble biscuits, sponge cake, chocolate chunks and crushed, roasted cocoa beans.

Ranked 112th is „Fratelli Invest SL“ in Santa Cruz, the capital of Tenerife. The man behind it is master ice-cream maker Eloido Aguilera Quintana. Stefano Rosso Viera took 118th place with „Bambola Gelato Crepes & Waffles“. The ice-cream parlour is located in the San Andrés district, not far from Teresitas Beach.

David Rodríguez comes in at 139th place with his patisserie of the same name in Puerto de la Cruz. He shares this position with, amongst others, „Panna Cioccolato“ in Arona. Rodríguez avoids additives entirely, whilst at Panna Cioccolato, Roberto Scarlatella is renowned for his unusual creations.

Close behind are „Kerrico Heladeria“ and „Gelato del Mercato“ – also tied for 143rd place. Gelato del Mercato is located in Los Cristianos in the south of Tenerife. Laura Ferrari is in charge there. Kerrico Heladería is situated in neighbouring Adeje and is run by the Argentine Carina Graciela Rodz Nickel.

The best ice-cream parlours in Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is also represented on the list. The following ice-cream parlours, all of which are located in the capital, Las Palmas, came out on top:

  • 105th place: „José Javier Rodríguez Medina“ (himself)
  • 139th place: „Guirlache“ by Isidro Ortiz Trujillo
  • 143rd place: „Gelatomania 2.0“ by Gianfranco Viscito
