Puerto de la Cruz

Lago Martiánez goes smoke-free from Saturday 31 May

The ban covers the sunbed areas and the pools, while two designated smoking zones remain in the food and drink sections. Puerto de la Cruz town hall has timed the move to coincide with World No Tobacco Day.

On Friday, people will be allowed to smoke their last cigarettes at Lago Martiánez in Tenerife. From Saturday, a smoking ban will come into force at the popular water park in Puerto de la Cruz. This was announced by the local council in northern Tenerife.

Lago Martiánez is a swimming pool designed for the whole family. As well as various children’s pools and play areas, there is a large pool for adults, plus plenty of food and drink options. In the spring, the parasols and sun loungers were replaced and the prices were adjusted straight away.

The next step is now: as part of all these changes, a smoking ban is to be introduced. However, it will not apply across the board, but only to the leisure areas – that is, on the sun loungers and in and around the water. To accommodate this, there will be two designated smoking areas:

In the pool’s food and drink areas, on the other hand, there will be designated smoking areas. This will allow smokers to take a cigarette break. The reason given for all this is the swimming pool’s transformation into „a family-friendly and safe environment for the whole family“.

It is no coincidence that the smoking ban at the popular swimming pool comes into force on 31 May of all days. Local politicians are implementing the measure to mark World No Tobacco Day.

Felipe Rodríguez is responsible for the wider swimming sector at the town hall. The politician speaks of the „responsibility for public health and the well-being of our visitors“. The aim is „for everyone to be able to enjoy themselves without a care in the world“.

For the mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Leopoldo Afonso, „this step is essential to making Puerto de la Cruz even healthier and more sustainable. The health of our residents and tourists is a priority, and we are confident that this new measure will be welcomed by everyone.“

The Martiánez swimming pool has been repeatedly remodelled and refurbished over the past few years. It has been considered complete since this year. Regular minor repairs are intended to help prevent major refurbishment backlogs from building up again, as has happened in the past.
